He'd thought it would hurt.
That he would struggle against it.
His lungs put up heartfelt resistance and felt close to bursting, true. But they didn't feel like his. They felt far away and belonging to someone else.
He was numb, sort of. His thoughts were numb, too. Fading.
Someone inside his head was playing piano very softly, far away.
He opened his eyes and exhaled, watching the bubbles rise through the cool, faintly-bluish water to the surface.
Then he inhaled heavy water, and everything he saw started to blur and darken around the edges.
He weighed more now. Sinking.
The darkness started closing in. He couldn't see much of anything now. Just wavering shapes.
Another exhale, only this time there were no bubbles. One more inhale. He felt like what a merman must feel like. Only, much sleepier...
The piano in his head faded, and he drifted off, under the water.
