I hesitated. Almost pushed it, then hesitated again.
As if of its own will, my index finger pressed the button.
Ring...Ring...Ring...
I almost hung up right then.
But I wanted to talk to her.
It had been too long since I had last heard her voice.
"Hello?" Her sweet voice answered. Confident, wonderful. Just wonderful.
I couldn't answer. I choked up, the words wouldn't come out.
There were so many things I wanted to say...
"Hello?" This time questioning, slightly afraid.
A few more heartbeats.
I couldn't take it anymore. My failure.
I hung up and sat down to face another night alone.
